There are houses you visit. And then there are houses you experience. A home where warm colours and an oak ceiling create a sense of calm you feel before you have even had time to put it into words. I-Wood Denmark® supplied 250 m² of 3-lamella ceiling panels, installed both indoors and outdoors in a show home in Horsens by Menzer & Kristensen.

More and more people are looking for an alternative to the traditional pitched roof – homes with generous ceiling heights, vaulted ceilings and architecture that feels both open and warm. This forms the basis of the show home in Horsens, and the choice of materials naturally supports the concept.

The light PU floor extends beneath your feet. Above it all is the oak: warm and consistent throughout the entire house – even outdoors.

For Torben Slabowsky Ditlevsen, Creative Director at Menzer & Kristensen, designing a house does not begin with a floor plan. It begins with an awareness of clear trends and developments in the market. The contrast between the light PU floor and the warm oak is therefore no coincidence. It was carefully developed, as he explains:

Indoors and outdoors as one

One of the home’s strongest qualities is the connection between the interior and exterior. The windows follow the high roof structure, allowing daylight to reach deep into the rooms.

Where the house opens towards the covered outdoor space, the oak ceiling continues uninterrupted. The only difference between the indoor and outdoor areas is that the ceiling panels from I-Wood Denmark® are available in a moisture-resistant version suitable for outdoor use:

“We have been working for a long time to connect the indoor and outdoor areas. The ceiling supports that sense of space, and extending the concept outdoors was quite straightforward. We only had to consider whether it would withstand the outdoor conditions, but I-Wood had already taken care of that.”

A partnership that works both ways

Behind the finished result is a collaboration that, according to Torben Slabowsky Ditlevsen, is about more than deliveries and deadlines. It is about having a trusted partner:

“I discuss ideas with them a great deal, and the dialogue works both ways. I have never considered choosing another supplier. I involve them early in the process – for example, to determine the maximum panel heights available. I can then centre the design around that,” he says.

According to Torben Slabowsky Ditlevsen, the level of service has also been crucial on larger projects:

“Large projects always require a high level of service, and the service has been absolutely excellent. They respond quickly and supply new products if challenges arise. We have felt heard and taken seriously. They have considered every aspect of the solution – from start to finish, including felt edges and covers. In practice, there is often six months between completing the drawings and needing the products on site. A lot can happen during that time, but I-Wood always demonstrates a genuine willingness to make the project succeed.”

The result exceeded expectations

The chosen solution was I-Wood Denmark® 3-lamella ceiling panels in oak with beige felt.

Traditional acoustic panels typically feature black or grey felt, creating a distinct contrast with the wood. The beige felt creates a tone-on-tone expression in which the mouldings and the spaces between them visually blend together to form one calm, cohesive surface.

When the show home opened, the reactions were unmistakable, according to the Creative Director:

“I was incredibly excited, but the result fully lived up to our expectations. A great many people have visited the house, and the ceiling has been a positive surprise for at least eight out of ten visitors. It is rare for one of our show homes to receive such a strong response. The ceiling has really become a talking point. We like creating something that challenges people’s expectations a little – and we have succeeded in doing that here.”
